I want to thank everyone who attended the College Success Seminar last night at Watchung Booksellers in
Here are some strategies on how you can become a super student . . .
- Show up.
- Showing up is not enough. You also have to pay attention.
- Ask questions.
- Ask for help.
- Help others.
- Do the work. (Do what you have to do, when you have to do it, whether you feel like it or not — no matter what.)
- Don’t quit.
- Don’t just go to school — be a student.
- Don’t just be “in” school, be “into” school! There’s a BIG difference between being enrolled and being involved.
- Read The Memory Book by Harry Lorrayne and Jerry Lucas.
- D.W.Y.S.Y.W.D. (Do What You Say You Will Do.)
- Make at least one friend in each of your classes.
- Realize that it’s the start that stops most people.
- Attend professional conferences in your field while you’re still an undergraduate.
- Discouraged??? Watch the movie Rudy.
- Don’t say, “I can’t,” when you really mean, “I don’t want to.”
- Stop underestimating yourself.
- Flash cards are a great study aide.
- Study abroad.
- Co-ops and internships are invaluable.
- You don’t have to “like” a class to excel in it.
- Need a pep talk? Call Dr. Gilbert’s Success Hotline at (973) 743-4690.
- Diligence beats intelligence every single time.
- OVER-prepare.
- Do it. Do it right. Do it right now!
- Get a tutor before you need one.
- Sleep eight to nine hours every night.
- “It’s your attitude, not your aptitude, that determines your altitude.” —Zig Ziglar
- Take a big gulp. “College is a fountain of knowledge where some come to drink, more come to sip, but, unfortunately, most come just to gargle.”
- Put these six words on a post-it note and place it where you’ll see it every day: “The tassel is worth the hassle.”
- Celebrate! Attend graduation.
- “Exceed expectations.” — Dr. Melissa Sapio
at the right time
