MESSAGE #32 - THE NOTES FROM LAST NIGHT

I want to thank everyone who attended the College Success Seminar last night at Watchung Booksellers in Montclair, NJ.

Just in case you didn’t attend, I was taking notes for you!

Here are some strategies on how you can become a super student . . .

  1. Show up.
  2. Showing up is not enough. You also have to pay attention.
  3. Ask questions.
  4. Ask for help.
  5. Help others.
  6. Do the work. (Do what you have to do, when you have to do it, whether you feel like it or not — no matter what.)
  7. Don’t quit.
  8. Don’t just go to school — be a student.
  9. Don’t just be “in” school, be “into” school! There’s a BIG difference between being enrolled and being involved.
  10. Read The Memory Book by Harry Lorrayne and Jerry Lucas.
  11. D.W.Y.S.Y.W.D. (Do What You Say You Will Do.)
  12. Make at least one friend in each of your classes.
  13. Realize that it’s the start that stops most people.
  14. Attend professional conferences in your field while you’re still an undergraduate.
  15. Discouraged??? Watch the movie Rudy.
  16. Don’t say, “I can’t,” when you really mean, “I don’t want to.”
  17. Stop underestimating yourself.
  18. Flash cards are a great study aide.
  19. Study abroad.
  20. Co-ops and internships are invaluable.
  21. You don’t have to “like” a class to excel in it.
  22. Need a pep talk? Call Dr. Gilbert’s Success Hotline at (973) 743-4690.
  23. Diligence beats intelligence every single time.
  24. OVER-prepare.
  25. Do it. Do it right. Do it right now!
  26. Get a tutor before you need one.
  27. Sleep eight to nine hours every night.
  28. “It’s your attitude, not your aptitude, that determines your altitude.” —Zig Ziglar
  29. Take a big gulp. “College is a fountain of knowledge where some come to drink, more come to sip, but, unfortunately, most come just to gargle.”
  30. Put these six words on a post-it note and place it where you’ll see it every day: “The tassel is worth the hassle.”
  31. Celebrate! Attend graduation.
  32. “Exceed expectations.” — Dr. Melissa Sapio

And here the ULTIMATE RULE FOR COLLEGE SUCCESS:

“Be at the right place,

at the right time

and do the right thing.”

- Coach Oliver Gelston

Starting today on Success Hotline (973.743.4690), is a special three-day weekend mini-seminar on “How We Can Change the World!”
